on AI, systems, taste, and the human filter
It’s wild how much one person can create now. It’s wild how much one person can create now.
A thought can turn into writing, a visual, an interface, a prototype, even a product that earns real money. Work that used to take a team and months can now begin with one conversation with an AI agent.A thought can turn into writing, a visual, an interface, a prototype, even a product that earns real money. That kind of access is new. That kind of access is new.
But in the process, creativity is getting polluted. But in the process, creativity is getting polluted.
A lot of what we see online now feels unfinished, even if it technically works fine. Even great, actually. It just doesn’t feel like a person made it.A lot of what we see online now feels unfinished, even if it technically works fine. Even great, actually. It just doesn’t feel like a person made it.
speed
Things used to change slowly enough for people to understand what was happening. That space is mostly gone.Things used to change slowly enough for people to understand what was happening. That space is mostly gone.
Something experimental 6 months ago is already a default workflow at some companies. Hell, we are joking about tokens on tl now. New tools, models, and agents keep showing up, reshaping how we make before we’ve even adjusted to the last wave.Something experimental 6 months ago is already a default workflow at some companies. That speed gives real leverage to people with something to say. An idea that would have stayed in the Notes app forever can become a fully working prototype in hours, carried by one person with enough focus and passion for it.That speed gives real leverage to people with something to say. It also makes it easy to stop too early. When it’s good enough. It also makes it easy to stop too early. When it’s good enough.
You can take the first-prompted result from Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, whatever you use, and ship it before you’ve really figured out if this is what you actually wanted to create, it still feels like it isn’t quite yours yet. And that feeling is worth listening to because it’s real. You can take the first-prompted result from Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, whatever you use, and ship it before you’ve really figured out if this is what you actually wanted to create, it still feels like it isn’t quite yours yet. Good enough is never good enough.Good enough is never good enough.
thinking
AI is already changing how we think through work.AI is already changing how we think through work.
Some use it to avoid the uncomfortable part of thinking. They doubt information less, research less, and skip the stretch where original ideas usually start to form. Some use it to avoid the uncomfortable part of thinking. Others use it to think wider. They test more directions, find new connections, question their own assumptions, and build things that used to be impossible to make alone.Others use it to think wider. But AI doesn’t give you depth or care or a point of view. It expands what’s already there. But AI doesn’t give you depth or care or a point of view. It expands what’s already there.
If you bring curiosity and judgment into the process, it can help you go much further. If you don’t, the work may get faster without getting any better. If you bring curiosity and judgment into the process, it can help you go much further. systems
This is also where I keep thinking about systems. This is also where I keep thinking about systems.
Most of us were trained to look around before we act. To check what feels acceptable to others, what already works, what seems safe. And you can feel it immediately when something was made that way. There’s no weight behind it.Most of us were trained to look around before we act. To check what feels acceptable to others, what already works, what seems safe. AI can make that habit faster: follow the obvious reference, copy the average, stay inside whatever already exists ~ no real filter.AI can make that habit faster: follow the obvious reference, copy the average, stay inside whatever already exists ~ no real filter.
That’s how AI slop is made. That’s how AI slop is made.
When you actually bring something to the table, a good chat with AI can help you take an idea that only makes sense in your head and start giving it shape. When you actually bring something to the table, a good chat with AI can help you take an idea that only makes sense in your head and start giving it shape.
That’s the version I care about. That’s the version I care about.
taste
Taste isn’t just personal preference. It’s the ability to notice quality, and that kind of eye takes years to build. You get it by making things, looking closely, iterating, caring about details, and learning why something works.Taste isn’t just personal preference. That’s why design makes this shift feel so real to me.That’s why design makes this shift feel so real to me.
The difference between generating an output and actually creating something usually lives in the parts most people don’t notice: rhythm, hierarchy, atmosphere, restraint, clarity, and the right amount of nothing. The difference between generating an output and actually creating something usually lives in the parts most people don’t notice: rhythm, hierarchy, atmosphere, restraint, clarity, and the right amount of nothing.
Good design isn’t going away.Good design isn’t going away.
Designers with real taste and deep care for the craft are entering a very strong era. Execution is becoming easier, but the eye is still rare.Designers with real taste and deep care for the craft are entering a very strong era. Execution is becoming easier, but the eye is still rare.
That gap between idea and execution used to be huge. Now it’s closing fast, and designers with a strong sense of taste can move much closer to the product itself. That gap between idea and execution used to be huge. The best designers from here forward will shape technology through their own filter. They’ll build their own products, use LLMs almost like an extension of how they think, and still keep the thinking for themselves. The best designers from here forward will shape technology through their own filter. This is why taste matters the most now. The tools can help you move faster, but the decisions still have to be yours. This is why taste matters the most now. The tools can help you move faster, but the decisions still have to be yours.
a builder path
For a long time, I could see ideas clearly in my head. I could design them, explain them, imagine the feeling of them. Turning them into working products required a different kind of access. For a long time, I could see ideas clearly in my head. I could design them, explain them, imagine the feeling of them. Now that gap is closing fast, so the old excuses don’t hit the same anymore. Now that gap is closing fast, so the old excuses don’t hit the same anymore.
Some of my ideas are already becoming real products. Others are still being tested: apps, essays, design directions, and small systems for thinking and creating. Some of my ideas are already becoming real products. They all circle the same thing: keeping the human filter alive. They all circle the same thing: keeping the human filter alive.
I use AI every day, and it’s genuinely incredible. I just don’t want to lose myself inside the convenience of it.I use AI every day, and it’s genuinely incredible. I just don’t want to lose myself inside the convenience of it.
choice
It becomes obvious that the most exciting part of this workflow shift isn’t the speed. It’s that people with deep care for the craft, judgment, and real opinions can finally build with much more power than before. It becomes obvious that the most exciting part of this workflow shift isn’t the speed. For a long time, many ideas stayed small because they needed too much: a team, a budget, the right timing, permission, technical help, momentum. For a long time, many ideas stayed small because they needed too much: a team, a budget, the right timing, permission, technical help, momentum.
Again, the distance between seeing something clearly and making it real is much shorter.Again, the distance between seeing something clearly and making it real is much shorter.
That changes the responsibility too. That changes the responsibility too.
The work I care about comes from a very specific kind of creator. Someone who can think with AI without letting it replace their own thinking, who holds the idea longer, questions it, shapes it, and pulls it through their own vision until it becomes work only they could have made. The work I care about comes from a very specific kind of creator. It's pretty much undeniable in May 2026.It's pretty much undeniable in May 2026.
AI will keep getting more powerful. What matters now is whether we keep strengthening our own ability to think, choose, and see clearly.AI will keep getting more powerful. What matters now is whether we keep strengthening our own ability to think, choose, and see clearly.
The human filter is the whole game. That’s the part we still control. The human filter is the whole game. That’s the part we still control.
Creativity isn’t disappearing. It’s just becoming easier to see who’s actually choosing it.Creativity isn’t disappearing. It’s just becoming easier to see who’s actually choosing it.
And the work that lasts will come from those who do.And the work that lasts will come from those who do.
